Perfect Pinup Emily Katz is the Cat’s Meow

Emily Katz won Perfect Pinup April with her inspiring story and her strong heart. Emily is certainly glamorous in every sense of the word, and I am so honored to have had a chance to get to know a little more about her. Read on to find out more about what makes her so unique — and this month’s Perfect Pinup!

What is your favorite part of “pinning” yourself up?
“A wise woman once told me “there is nothing more empowering than doing your morning routine while wearing your sexiest lingerie and listening to seductive music”. I incorporate this motto into my everyday routine while applying makeup and styling my hair. Although it may not seem like much, it never fails to send me out the door feeling glamorous and confident.”

What do you enjoy the most about being a Pinup girl?
“Although I’d love to say my favorite part about being a pinup is something profound and inspiring, in reality I love the attention. I’m majoring in technical theatre, so while I love working back stage, it’s nice to step into the spotlight once in a while.”

Tell us about some of the hurdles you’ve faced in the industry, and how did you overcome them?
“When I first joined the pinup world I was only around fifteen or sixteen, so I was still very impressionable, and eager to please those around me. I became friends with various people who would make me feel less than perfect in order to lift themselves up. At the time I thought these people truly cared for my well being, but I eventually realized that earning other’s acceptance wasn’t the key to loving myself. I’ve since moved on to surround myself with wonderful and supportive friends, in and out of the community, as well as a wonderful boyfriend who has been a huge support system through all my struggles. By keeping these people close I’ve achieved so much more than I ever thought possible, and am working hard to better myself every day.”

What kind of advice do you have for girls who want to get into Pinup but are hesitant or shy to try it?
“I have a few: First and foremost, there are more than enough people who will criticize every choice you make, so leave that negativity to them and love yourself. Remember that we are currently living in 2017, and that pinup is for every one, whatever race, body type, or gender they are. Finally, anything you do, do it for yourself. If you want to wake up two hours early to doll yourself up every morning then do it, if you’d rather wear the clothes without makeup or doing your hair then so be it! True vintage or repro, cute or sultry, this is for you alone, so don’t let anyone define what pinup is to you.”

What changes do you think modern Pinups offer today’s society?
“There are so many things I could touch on for this, but my personal favorite is how many of the beliefs modern pinups advocate, are things society and the media shun. Everywhere they go, women are compelled to spend all their time and money on looking beautiful, while acting like this beauty is effortless, and natural. Unlike this expectation, which results in an unrealistic standard of what beauty is, the pinup community prides itself on looking beautiful, without feeling ashamed of the work it took to get there. While we do preach about loving ones body, a byproduct of that is allowing oneself to be proud of the amount of effort we put into our appearance, and the end result of that effort. In a world that calls self-depreciation as humility, its a breath of fresh air to be surrounded by a community that encourages women to feel confident and treat themselves.”
